Can you buy a Medigap policy whenever you like?
Medigap or Medicare Supplement plans are subject to enrollment periods, and you must enroll for one of the Medicare supplements plans in Florida within the given timeframe. You must sign up for Medicare Part B at least three months before your birthday.
The open enrollment for Medigap will begin on the first day of the month in which you are 65 or older (provided you have already enrolled in Medicare Part B) and will last for six months from that day. During a Medicare Supplement Open Enrollment Period, all insurance companies cannot use medical underwriting and hence cannot reject you based on a health problem that you develop in this window. Once your Medicare Supplement open enrollment period begins, a new health issue/condition cannot change/affect your eligibility into a Medicare Supplement plan.
What is a Medigap plan, and should I buy it?
Private insurance companies sell Medigap plans, and these policies pay for health care costs not falling under the original Medicare, such as co-payments, coinsurance, and deductibles. Some of the Medigap plans also offer medical care coverage when you travel outside the U.S.
Medigap plans are different from a Medicare Advantage plan, as the former only supplements your original Medicare plan while the latter acts as a means to get Medicare benefits. If you already have a Medicare plan and wish to buy a Medigap policy, Medicare will pay the approved amount for covered health care costs, and the Medigap plan will pay for other expenses (based on the plan you choose).
